Las posibilidades que el Presidente pierda la primera magistratura vía la censura a su cargo como Presidente del Congreso-encargado de la Presidencia de la República-disminuyen con el paso de las horas.

En efecto, en su presentación ante la Comisión de Fiscalización del Congreso la tarde del miércoles, los congresistas vacadores o censuradores no lograron su cometido de vapulear al Presidente y más bien, permitieron que diera explicaciones si bien repetitivas y hasta insuficientes, en un tono aplomado y seguro que dio la impresión de una mínima verosimilitud. Ciertamente Jerí contrasta favorablemente con sus predecesores Castillo y Boluarte no solo en su estilo asertivo y elocuente sino en su voluntad de no eludir declaraciones frente a congresistas y frente a periodistas de todos los medios. Y eso en las circunstancias actuales, es una ventaja que Jerí está sabiendo aprovechar.

Los partidos políticos y las bancadas que los representan en el Congreso están circulando cuatro mociones de vacancia que dan más la impresión de redactarse y presentarse “para la tribuna” que para que realmente se hagan efectivas. Para completar la puesta en escena, dichas mociones vienen acompañadas de declaraciones en los medios de parte de sus respectivos voceros en las que piden la renuncia del Presidente y parecen promover la correspondiente sesión de un pleno futuro para tratar la censura.

Es más probable que esta crisis termine esta semana a que la misma tome cuerpo y genere la censura presidencial que obligaría a que el Congreso elija un nuevo Presidente a menos de 80 días de las elecciones y escogiendo de entre un grupo muy reducido de potenciales candidatos que no generan mayor entusiasmo.

The possibility of the President losing his position via the Congressional President’s censure—in charge of the Presidency of the Republic—is diminishing with each passing hour.

Indeed, in his appearance before the Congressional Oversight Committee on Wednesday afternoon, the impeaching or censuring congressmen failed in their mission to vilify the President and instead allowed him to explain himself, albeit repetitively – even inadequately, in a calm and confident tone that left an impression of minimal credibility. Jerí certainly contrasts favorably with his predecessors Castillo and Boluarte, not only in his assertive and eloquent style, but also in his willingness to not shy away from making statements before members of Congress and journalists from all media outlets. Given the current circumstances, this is an advantage that Jerí is proving to be adept at exploiting.

The political parties and the groups representing them in Congress are circulating four motions of impeachment that seem to have been drafted and presented more for show rather than having any real intention of being enforced. To complete the stage-setting, these motions are being accompanied by statements in the media by their respective spokespersons calling for the president’s resignation and apparently promoting a future plenary session to discuss possible censure.

It is more likely that this crisis will end this week rather than escalating and leading to a presidential impeachment, thus forcing Congress to elect a new president less than 80 days before the upcoming national elections, choosing from a very small group of potential candidates who do not generate much enthusiasm.
