The Passion Behind Research
This week, I had the opportunity to meet with Prof. Dr. Christian M. Ringle at the Hamburg University of Technology. We engaged in a long and insightful discussion on various topics. Given the importance of research, I find it essential to share an excerpt from our conversation to benefit Peruvian researchers and business executives.
DN: Dr. Ringle, what inspired you to teach PLS-SEM, write books and scientific articles, and develop a data analysis software like SmartPLS?
CR: I always strive to give my best. I was fortunate to receive mentorship from an outstanding professor, Prof. Dr. Joe Hair, who recognized great potential in me. Along with my colleague Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Marko Sarstedt, we had the privilege of being trained by an exceptional professor who helped shape our academic careers and became a good colleague and true friend. Our road to success was paved with many years of dedication and sacrifice. Today, I am truly passionate about teaching, writing, and passing on knowledge to future generations – and hopefully, I will be able to inspire and support many young talents myself.
DN: What are the next steps for SmartPLS?
CR: Our software has significantly helped business researchers publish high-quality articles, and its user-friendly interface has made it widely accessible in business practice as well. The main focus is on integrating additional complementary analysis methods. Thereby, SmartPLS will become a fully-fledged machine learning software and further expand its capabilities, usefulness and reach.
DN: How can someone build a strong international career like yours?
CR: The key factor is discipline. I usually work 70 hours a week, sometimes more, sometimes less – just as if I had recently completed my PhD. The combination of time, consistency, and carefully choosing the right people to collaborate with—both personally and professionally—makes all the difference.
DN: What advice would you give to Peruvian researchers?
CR: Focus on quality, not quantity. Earning a PhD is a challenging yet rewarding journey. Don’t rush the process—slow and steady, but always hard working, wins the race. Finally, if you find passion in your work and it becomes your hobby, success will naturally follow.
